Enlisted Affiliation

In order to smoothly and successfully transition from your Active Army career into a civilian career, you need to develop and implement a sound transition strategy. At a minimum, your strategy should include attending the Transition Assistance Program workshop, conducting job market analysis, submitting applications and resumes, participating in job fairs and job interviews, and assessing the advantages of joining either the Army Reserve or Army National Guard.

Use the below matrix to determine if you have any remaining Military Service Obligation. Assess the various benefits you can maintain by affiliating with the Army Reserve, Army Nation Guard, and State and Territory benefits. Use the Army Career and Alumni Program services portal to prepare for military to civilian transition.

If you have remaining Military Service Obligation (MSO), you have a choice of voluntarily affiliating with the U.S. Army Reserve (USAR) or Army National Guard of the U.S. (ARNGUS), or involuntarily transferring into the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR). Do you meet the criterion in AR 601-280, Paragraph 7-7?

If you have 1 year or less of remaining MSO, you may enlist into the USAR or ARNGUS for 1 year 2 through 6 years
If you have less than 3 months of remaining MSO, you may enlist may enlist into the IRR for 3 years 4 through 6 years

Transfer Period Determination Matrix
