What Are Your Options?

Use the following flowchart to determine which criterion in AR 601-280, Paragraph 4-1 and Appendix E you meet? After determining your option(s), read their description in the below matrix, then contact your Career Counselor to discuss any questions and additional option criterion, or ways to overcome any ineligibility.

Reenlistment Option Description Matrix
Option Description
Regular Army

Assigned and used according to the needs of the Army. There is no guarantee of assignment, training, or stabilization.

  • If you are a PVT through SGT or a SSG through CSM with less than 10 years of Active Service on your discharge date, you may reenlist for 2 through 6 years.
  • If you are a SSG through CSM with 10 or more years of Active Service on your discharge date, you may reenlist for an indefinite period.
Current Station Stabilization

Guarantees 1 to 12 months stabilization beginning on your reenlistment date (if located in CONUS) or on your DEROS date (if located in OCONUS). If you are TDY or TCS during the stabilization period in excess of 30 consecutive days, your stabilization increases by that number of days, unless you waive stabilization. If your unit deploys, relocates, transfers, or is reassigned from the parent organization, you will deploy with the unit and there are no grounds for broken reenlistment commitment. If the guaranteed station inactivates and your transfer is necessary before completing your stabilization period, you will be given the choice of assignment to any other station in the Major Command (if a vacancy in MOS and grade exists). If no vacancy exists, reassignment will be according to the needs of the Army. If the guaranteed station re-designates, relocates, transfers, or deploys, you move as part of the station.

  • If you are a PVT through SSG, you may reenlist for 3 through 6 years. As an exception Mid-Careerist and deployed Initial Termers may reenlist for 2 years and stabilize for 1 to 6 months.
  • If you are assigned to a TDA unit, you must have less than 23 months Time on Station (TOS) at the time of reenlistment (CONUS based) or DEROS (OCONUS based) Soldiers. Soldiers may not exceed 24 months TOS when adding reenlistment stabilization to current TOS.
  • If you are assigned to a MTO&E unit, there is no Time on Station restrictions.
  • If you are within 6 months of ETS, DEROS, or life cycle e-date, you must request an exception to policy.
Army Training

Guarantees attendance at an available service school of choice for MOS, SQI, ASI, or language training. If you are relieved from the school for academic deficiency, disciplinary reasons, or failure to retain the required security clearance; become disqualified after reenlisting and before starting the school; your rank or MOS changes before starting the school and you are no longer eligible for attendance or assignment, you will be reassigned according to the needs of the Army and must complete your term. If the course is discontinued before or during attendance, or if you are later medically disqualified for the course, you will be given a chance to select another course for which qualified and quotas are available.

  • If you are a PVT through SSG, you may reenlist for 3 through 6 years.
  • If you are reenlisting for a new MOS, you must meet the minimum SRR for the new MOS and follow on assignment using a combination of reenlistment and extension; extension will not exceed 11 months.
  • You must meet the school/training eligibility as outlined in DA PAM 611-21 (chapter 10).
  • If you are attending training in a PCS or TDY en-route status, you must be within 12 months of the available to move date (DEROS, LCM end date, or AEA end date).

 Overseas Assignment

Guarantees initial assignment to Korea, Pacific area, Alaska, Caribbean area, Europe or Hawaii for 24 months or 12 months from date of arrival of dependents in long-tour areas (whichever occurs later). Particular units within the area of choice are not guaranteed. If your rank or MOS changes before movement, you may become ineligible for the assignment and assigned according to the needs of the Army. If all units in the guaranteed long-tour area are inactivated before you complete 12 months, you will be given a choice of reassignment (if a vacancy in rank and MOS exists). If this is not possible, reassignment will be made according to the needs of the Army. If the unit to which you are assigned relocates, transfers, or deploys outside the guaranteed area, you move with the unit.

  • If you are a PVT through SSG, you may reenlist for 3 years (short tour), or 4 through 6 years (long tour). As an exception, Mid-Careerist and Careerist (offered Mi-Careerist options) may reenlist for the minimum period to meet the SRR for assignment using a combination of reenlistment and extension (extension may not exceed 11 months).
  • There must be a requirement for your MOS in the overseas area of choice. Contact your Career Counselor or Branch Manager.
  • You must qualify as a volunteer for overseas service according to AR 614-30, paragraph 3-1?
  • You must be within 12 months of the available to move date (DEROS, LCM end date, or AEA end date).
 CONUS Station-of-Choice

Guarantees initial assignment to CONUS station of choice for 12 months from date of arrival. Particular units within the station of choice are not guaranteed. The station includes the installation and any other location in close proximity, for which the installation has requisitioning authority (e.g. Fort Eustis and Fort Story, or Fort Stewart and Hunter Army Airfield). If you are TDY or TCS during the stabilization period in excess of 30 consecutive days, your stabilization increases by that number of days, unless you waive stabilization. If your rank or MOS changes before movement, you may become ineligible for the assignment and assigned according to the needs of the Army. If your unit deploys, relocates, transfers, or is reassigned from the parent organization, you will deploy with the unit and there are no grounds for broken reenlistment commitment. If the guaranteed station inactivates and your transfer is necessary before you complete the stabilization period, you will be given the choice of assignment to any other station in the Major Command to which assigned (if a vacancy in MOS and grade exists). If no vacancy exists, reassignment will be according to the needs of the Army. If the guaranteed station re-designates, relocates, transfers, or deploys, you move as part of the station.

  • If you are a PVT through SSG, you may reenlist for 4 through 6 years. As an exception, Initial Termers within 12 months of ETS, you may reenlist for 3 years; Mid-Careerist and Careerist (with Mid-Careerist options) may reenlist for the minimum period to meet the SRR for assignment using a combination of reenlistment and extension (extension may not exceed 11 months).
  • There must be a requirement for your MOS in the overseas area of choice. Contact your Career Counselor or Branch Manager.
  • You must have no assignment limitations that would preclude assignment to the station of choice.
  • You must be within 12 months of the available to move date (DEROS, LCM end date, or AEA end date).
